2319: Foundation š ļø
HAPPY NEW YEAR! šš„³
Itās been a minute since my last write-up. Since then, a lot happened fast: I ran my first half-marathon (it went great), the weather flipped, and I came down with the flu right after the race. Not the most glamorous combo, but still a core memory.
After that, I took a much-needed holiday break from my usual routine. Family and friends were back in town, and we actually did the thingāspent real time together. My family also took a Christmas trip to the Bahamas, which felt like stepping into a different world. Waking up to warm air, blue water, and sunshine every day will reset your brain in a way that ārestā back home canāt always touch.
I brought my journal with me because I thought I might write if inspiration hit⦠but honestly, I didnāt want to chase productivity on vacation. I wanted to disconnect and be as present as I could with my familyāsomething Iāve been getting better at over time. Out there, the biggest question each day wasnāt āWhat do I need to get done?ā It was: Which part of the resort am I claiming today, and which pool is calling my name? Life got simple in the best way.
When we got back to the States, the build-up to Christmas kicked in. Iāve said it before, but thereās a warmth to this season that you donāt really get anywhere else. I knocked out last-minute shopping, and one of my favorite gifts to myself & family was grabbing tickets for the Allstate Sugar Bowl: Ole Miss vs. Georgia on New Yearās Day.
I also ran a Fleet Feet fun runāthe Santa Chaserāon Christmas Eve and got to catch up with friends I hadnāt seen in a while. And honestly, thatās been a big theme for me lately: reconnecting. For the last couple of years, Iāve been working on showing up moreāquick catch-ups, a run together, playing pickleball, grabbing lunch, seeing a movie, doing the small stuff that turns into the stuff you remember.
People who know me know I like things a certain wayāstructured, predictable, planned. Spontaneity hasnāt been my default setting. But Iām trying to stretch that muscle a little: saying yes more often, trying activities my friends enjoy, even when itās last-minute. I wasnāt perfect this year, but I made real progress.
The highlight, without question, was the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. It was an easy trip for my family and the majority of Ole Miss fans, and once we got inside the stadium it felt like a home game. Iāve never felt energy like thatāmomentum swinging from the opening kickoff, the whole place on its feet.
At one point, I flashed back to being a kid traveling to Oxford with my dad and my closest friendsāweek after weekājust hoping weād become contenders one day. Then I snapped back into the present with the biggest smile on my face, watching this team make history. Turnovers. Big plays. One final kick. And suddenly weāre headed to the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale.
What a moment. What a way to start the year.
And that brings me to what Iāve been focused on these first few days of the new year: foundation. A good foundation is what holds things up when life shiftsāwhen youāre busy, when youāre tired, when motivation disappears, when the calendar starts moving fast again.
This year, I want my foundation to be strong in the places that matter: health, faith, relationships, discipline, and the basics I can return to when everything gets noisy. Not flashy. Not perfect. Just solidāand built to last.
Peace,
Zechariah Davis
